Team Faith Race Report - June 1st
June 3, 2008
Round 2 of the Canadian Nationals was 2 hours from home at Gopher Dunes in Courtland Ontario.
This is a local track for me that I have raced many weekends on. I actually raced my very first race at this track as a beginner rider. The track consists of total beach sand and is called the toughest track on the circuit.
Saturday I spent the practice session figuring out a suspension setup for the sand and learning how to ride the sand after not being able to ride on a sand track since last year at this track. After the practice session I made a few more changes and got things ready for the Sunday morning practice.
Sunday morning at the Team Faith devotional I expanded on what I talked about last week. How everyday God wants to do new work in our lives and create us into a new person. This week I talked about how that transition process may look like. How just like professional riders we too were beginners at one stage. The same is true with the Christian life. We have to start somewhere and we will make mistakes but in time we will grow.
Qualifying went better than I anticipated. I thought I was very far off the pace for lap times. After I found out that I qualified 25th, which was good enough.
Moto 1 I got a very good start. It felt like I was going to get the hole shot but because of my gate pick being 25th I had to start further away from the corner and got pushed out wide in the first turn. The first few laps are always crazy in the sand because no one can see from all the flying sand and covered goggles. This is one of the tracks where being consistent is more important than speed. Many guys were falling during the race; I was in 18th position for most of the race when I had to back down my pace so I could finish the race without crashing. A few guys passed me and on the last lap I tipped over in a corner stalling my bike finishing 25th.
Moto 2 I again thought I was going to get the holeshot but got pushed out wide again. I came around after 2 laps in 17th when I got tangled with another rider tearing my header pipe off the bike. I managed to get the bike off the track and started. I rode back to the pit thinking that my day was over. When I got back I started taking the pipe off and changed it out from my practice bike and headed back out to finish the race. As I was heading back to the track other riders were pulling off because of crashes and broken bikes. I thought well if I can finish the race maybe I won't get 42nd. Much to my surprise, being 3 laps down. I passed enough riders to make it back to 27th position.
I have to say a very big thank you to a previous sponsor, Graeme Nelson from Two-Wheel Motorsport, for washing and prepping my bike on Sunday between motos. Graeme is one of the hardest working guys I know and if it weren't for Graeme's help in the past 7 years, myself and Team Faith in Canada would not be where we are today.
I would like to thank my sponsors who make things possible for Team Faith: Friends and family for their prayers and donations. As well as: Mainland Sand and Gravel ltd. New-Way Motorsports, Kawasaki Canada, Friesen Plastic Products ltd. Wild West Fencing inc. Fly Racing, Enzo Racing.
