Szoke Wins Pro 600 Race One At Race City, McCormick 3rd
July 1, 2007
Canadian Kawasaki rider Jordan Szoke came out on top of an exciting race to the finish in this afternoon’s Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike final at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park.
Szoke led the field on the first lap followed by his young Kawasaki teammate Brett McCormick, with the Team Suzuki Blackfoot Picotte Performance bikes of Francis Martin and Pascal Picotte right behind them. A pair of Yamahas, led by Fast Company’s Steve Crevier over Z1 Cycletech rider Andrew Nelson, was also part of the lead group of riders.
However, after only two laps, the race was red flagged when Pascal Picotte crashed on Race City’s backstraight. Picotte was transported to local hospital with suspected shoulder and rib injuries.
On the restart, it was again Szoke who charged to the lead with McCormick in tow. And again, the same group of riders was battling for the lead. Crevier took over the lead from Szoke on lap 7 and stayed at the front for four laps before Nelson was able to make his way through. The remaining laps saw the lead change a few more times, with Szoke making a last lap pass over Crevier leading onto the backstraight. Nelson and McCormick were also able to sneak through, leaving Crevier to finish fourth.
Szoke went on to win his second Pro 600 Sport Bike race of the season followed across the line by second place finisher Nelson and McCormick, who scored his first National Pro podium with third.
