Evennou takes second podium of season
Kamloops, B.C.(June 29, 2009) The Monster Energy/Thor/Leading Edge Kawasaski team rolled through the gates of Shadow Valley Raceway in Morden, Manitoba this past weekend with high hopes for the 2009 MX2 Championship. Coming off a strong performance the weekend before in Edmonton, Teddy Maier was looking to take his first moto win of the season and leapfrog the points leader, Dean Wilson, who is not racing any more CMRC Nationals in 2009.
The Morden race was almost in jeapordy of not happening as heavy rains and winds buffeted the track on Saturday, forcing the cancellation of the practice session and leaving the track underwater in some spots. Sunny weather and hard work from the track crew on Sunday morning had the track in a much improved state by the time the first practice sessions rolled around. In the first session, it was Leading Edge's Brock Hoyer who topped the leaderboard, ahead of his teammate Nick Evennou. Then, in qualifying it was Evennou who took his turn at the top of the charts, logging the fastest lap to take the number one spot.
In the first moto it was all Maier, as he got a top three start and quickly went to work getting to the front. After making the pass for the lead he continued to distance himself from the pack, taking the checkered flag and his first win of the season. Meanwhile, Evennou was also in podium contention before eventually finishing 4th. Brock Hoyer came across the line in 6th, giving the team their best result of the season.
The second moto again began with Maier in the top three off the start, with his teammate Evennou close in tow. After working his way into the lead, Maier again started pulling away when a mechanical failure took him out of the race. Luckily for Teddy, he had built enough of a points lead that he only trails Eric Nye by 2 points with 5 rounds to go. Plus, he gained the confidence of knowing that he's the quickest rider on the track and will be looking to put his Kawasaki back on the top of the podium when the series resumes in three weeks time. In his place, Nick Evennou rode a strong race to take third in the moto and third overall. His podium finish kept the streak alive for the team; so far Leading Edge has placed riders on the podium at every round and all three riders have grabbed holeshots, a testament to the power of their Kawasaki KX250F's.
The team now will take a three week break before the series resumes on July 18-19 at Gopher Dunes Motocross Facility in Courtland, Ontario.
