Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki Clinches Second Straight Canadian MX1 Championship

Metcalfe, Politelli take overall wins at Moncton

Kamloops, BC(August 6, 2013) The Penultimate round of the 2013 Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross Championships took place this past weekend at Moncton, New Brunswick’s Riverglade MX track and with a sizable lead coming into the race, things were looking good for Brett Metcalfe to clinch the team’s second straight MX1 championship and the Australian didn’t disappoint, using 3-1 moto scores to take the overall win and lockup the title with one round remaining. The prospects of a second straight double title sweep look good as well, as MX2 points leader, Austin Politelli, took a commanding 1-1 clean sweep in MX2 to further extend his lead atop the MX2 leaderboard.

In MX2, it was a day of domination for the green team as not only did Politelli take both moto wins, his teammate Tyler Villopoto provided his only competition, as the Washington native rode to 2-2 moto scores to join Politelli on the podium. After a couple trying weekend’s Politelli was happy to be back on track for his first Canadian title: “Today went awesome. I qualified third in practice. In the first moto I was about fifth off the start and just moved to the front as quick as I could, rode smart and pulled off the win. In the second moto, I got a really good start and battled with Davey Fraser for a few laps before getting by and taking the overall win. It was a good day compared to last weekend for sure.”

For Villopoto, his late season charge has been a chance to prove he belongs at the front of the pack: “Had a really good day. Each weekend these past three weekends have just been building – I got sixth at Sand Del Lee, then I won a moto and got second overall last weekend and this weekend I got a pair of seconds. It just feels good to be where I’m supposed to be. I had a couple crashes early in the season and my confidence was down but I’m glad it’s come around.”

In MX1, Metcalfe was relieved to wrap up the title early: “I got a really horrible start in the first moto and came through from about twentieth, up to third. I was happy with that on a track that was extremely hard to pass on. In the second moto, obviously my goal today was to wrap the championship up today, and going into the second moto I had a really good lead in the points – really my goal was to win that moto. I got a good start, came out second, and got the lead on the first lap. From there I just put my head down and just kind of gauged where the guys were behind me. It was pretty uneventful, really and I just held it on to the end. I felt like a long moto, just waiting for it to finish, knowing that I had the championship. It felt good to be in that position and a good experience for me. I enjoyed it – getting the championship is awesome.”

Also in MX1, Teddy Maier finished 5th overall on the day with a pair of 5th place moto finishes after taking a rock to the nose in moto one and suffering a suspected broken nose. It was a gritty performance for the Iowa native.

The series now takes a one week break before resuming in Walton, Ontario for the final round at the famous Walton TransCan. For more information on the Monster Energy CMRC Canadian Motocross series, visit
