Canadian Kawasaki Poised For Victory After JenningsGP Test

May 6, 2009

The Canadian Kawasaki Road Racing Team enjoyed a successful pre-season outing at the official Parts Canada Superbike Championship  two-day Pirelli Tire Test at the JenningsGP facility in Jennings, FL April 28th and 29th. Crew Chief Mike Crompton commented, "the testing sessions more than lived up to our expectations and both Jordan (Szoke) and his new teammate Alex (Welsh) are ready to tackle the 2009 Parts Canada Superbike and Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike Championship series. Everything went really well as far as the parts we wanted to test. We're happy with our progress and the results don't lie. We've got a great team! Everybody knows exactly what they have to do and that makes the job easier for us all." "We focused a lot of our attention on the new 600 and were very pleased with its performance. Actually during a private test held on the 30th, we were clocking unofficial lap times that were quite faster than the official ones. Jordan and Alex really stepped up to the plate this week. I'd say we're race-ready and looking to come out strong at Calabogie for the season opener, said Crompton."

Multi-time Superbike and Pro Sport Bike Champion Szoke left no doubt behind that he intends to take up where he left off last season by recording the fastest Superbike lap time around the twisty, 14-turn, 3.219km (2.0 mile) JenningsGP circuit.

In the process of setting the fastest time, the defending Parts Canada Superbike Champion established a new track record with a scorching lap time of one minute, 14.421 seconds on day two of testing. Szoke had already set the pace on the first day of testing claiming the fastest overall time in both classes, ending  the day just shy of the outright record at one-minute, 14.600 seconds aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R superbike.

In the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike class, the defending champ Szoke clocked the second best overall time during official testing on the brand new Kawasaki ZX-6R. His time of one minute, 15.071 was just thousands of a second shy of the top time of one minute, 15.052. On the third day, during a private test held under cooler morning temperatures, the Brantford, ON native actually improved on the best set the previous day by clocking an incredible time of 1:14:700.

"I'm definitely happy with my lap times, especially setting a new Superbike record. It's a nice way to head into the new season and I'm really looking forward to getting back in action and defending my titles. Both the ZX-10R and the ZX-6R ran flawlessly. "We expected the ZX-10R to do well because it's a proven machine, but what really impressed me is the new 600. It's an awesome motorcycle said Szoke."

Welsh, meanwhile, rose to the occasion with the fourth fastest time in Superbike at 1:17.996. In Pro Sport Bike, the 2008 HJC Pro Rookie of the Year recorded a time of 1:17.353, which also amounted to the fourth best time for the Uxbridge, ON native.

"While I'm still getting used to a new team and new equipment, I had a really positive feeling on the new ZX-6R right off the bat. I'm really excited to be part of this team and looking forward to the new season. I think things went pretty well. The first day I just kind of shook out the cobwebs but on day two it was business as usual," said Welsh.
