Team Faith Race Report - Gopher Dunes

July 21, 2009

After a 3 week break in the series, everyone returned to racing this weekend, in Southern Ontario for the Gopher Dunes National. With Gopher Dunes being a local track to my hometown, it was great to have many friends that I don’t get to see very often, at the race and supporting Team Faith.

Gopher Dunes is considered to be the toughest track in Canada. It consists of bottomless sand that develops into large braking bumps, whoops and holes around the entire track - leaving no place to catch a breath.

Saturday night, at our bible study, we played a Nooma video that talked about prayer. Kevin then shared some personal experiences about God answering and not answering prayer.

At the Sunday morning devotional, I shared a story about a conversation I had with one of my friends. The conversation was about death and how, when he died, he wanted people to be happy at his funeral; that his body here on earth meant nothing to him anymore and he would be in a better place in heaven, and people should be happy at his funeral because of that. Three weeks ago, this friend of mine died in a car accident while on his way to church. I shared verses from Romans 3:23-26 that tell us how we can be confident that by Christ’s death on the cross, we may be forgiven of our sins and made right with God and go to heaven.

Moto1 was an interesting one for me. I had a great jump off the line and was going into the first turn in great position, but I was hit by a rider from the inside causing me to crash and be run over by another. Thankfully I was fine after being run over, but the handlebars on my bike had broken in half due to the impact with the other bikes. So I was unable to continue in the first moto.

Kevin started the first lap of his first moto in 10th position. Throughout the moto, he fell back a few positions and later, got tangled with a lapped rider. Kevin rode a steady race and finished 16th.

In the second moto, I lined up at a gate close to the inside and had a great drive out of it - going into the first turn again in great position. A rider from behind hit my rear wheel while entering the first turn. Almost saving it, I ended up sliding out and going down again. I got up and established a strong, consistent pace and stayed on two wheels for the rest of the race, finishing 19th.

In Kevin’s second moto, he was in 11th after the first lap. After a few laps, he had made his way up to 9th but then fell twice during the moto, loosing positions and finishing in 14th.

This weekend the track was very demanding and rough. I think just about everyone fell during a moto at some point this weekend. However, overall the weekend was a successful one.
